How this calculator works
- Bilateral factor first. If you have compensable ratings on both arms or both legs, those are combined and 10% of the result is added (38 CFR 4.26).
- Combine in order of severity. Ratings are sorted from highest to lowest and combined one at a time with the Combined Ratings Table (38 CFR 4.25). Each step is a whole number.
- Round once, at the end. The final combined value is rounded to the nearest 10%. A 65 becomes 70%, a 64 becomes 60%.
- Look up pay. Your rounded rating and dependents are matched to VA’s published rate table, then added amounts (extra children, school-age children, spouse Aid and Attendance, SMC-K) are added.

What this calculator does not cover
It does not estimate back pay, TDIU (individual unemployability), SMC levels L through S, or offsets such as military retired pay or drill pay. VA decides your rating and payment. For free help with a claim, find an accredited VSO representative on VA.gov.
Frequently asked questions
How does the VA combine disability ratings?
VA does not add ratings together. It starts with your highest rating and applies each next rating to the part of you that is still “efficient,” using the Combined Ratings Table in 38 CFR 4.25. The final combined value is then rounded to the nearest 10%, with values ending in 5 rounded up. See how VA math works.
What is the bilateral factor?
If you have compensable ratings on both arms or both legs, VA combines those ratings first, then adds 10% of that combined value before combining it with your other ratings (38 CFR 4.26). Tag each rating with the arm or leg it affects and the calculator applies it automatically.
How much is 100% VA disability per month in 2026?
For a veteran with no dependents, the 100% rate effective December 1, 2025 is $3,938.58 per month, per VA.gov. Dependents and SMC can increase it. See the full 2026 pay chart.
Do dependents increase pay at 10% or 20%?
No. VA adds dependent amounts only when your combined rating is 30% or higher.
Is this calculator official?
No. This site is not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Results are estimates only. Your VA decision letter is the official record of your rating and payment.
